President’s Message – March 2019

The “YOYO” weather of late, with balmy temperatures and then wintery storms reminds us that it is still capable of getting extremely cold. The rink suffered a few blows but, with a bit of work we were able to get it back to a safe condition.

A BIG “THANK YOU” goes out to the Rink Rats who so generously give of their time to flood and keep the rink clear of snow. Our community has some of the most dedicated volunteers, and we are SO appreciative of their time and effort!

As usual, I write this a month ahead of publishing and so my hope is we had great weather for the Winterfest this year. In anticipation of first-time skaters, we had many volunteers to help so that they could try out one of Canada’s best winter sporting activities.

I would like to welcome Lambert the esteemed Academy of Sugar Craft to the Centre which run a children’s program for cake baking and decorating, please check our website with a link to the Academy’s website for more information.

The next Prairie Wrestling Alliance of Alberta event, REVELATION, will be on March 9, 2019. The Centre doors open at 7pm. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Centre Office.

Our 2018 – 2019 funding applications have been approved by the City of Calgary and in the final review stages with the Province of Alberta for the Capital Conservation Grant (CCG) and Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) for our next capital program. Here is a summary of what’s been approved so far: 1) Gymnasium Rooftop HVAC Unit Economizer actuator and motor, this equipment enables the HVAC to optimize recirculating interior air and intake of outside air providing the best efficient use of power and comfort to the gymnasium. 2) Kitchens, washrooms and workshop renovations. 3) Outdoor Rink Lights upgrade from HPS (high pressure sodium) to LED. The centre will be a buzz with upgrade activity in the coming months.

Be sure to check our calendar for an array of activities for children and adults. We have many of our regular programs continuing through the spring at the Centre. We are pleased to offer now the popular Zumba. Why not come on down and try it out!
