President’s Message – December 2017

The weather in Calgary has certainly been acting like a roller coaster lately and the long-term outlook sees no change for December. December Solstice on December 21st, Christmas Eve on December 24th, Christmas on December 25th, Boxing Day on December 26, New Years Eve December 31st and a fresh start to the New Year January 1st, 2018. Wishing you and your family a safe and great Holiday Season.

2017 Christmas Craft and Bake Sale takes place this year on Saturday and Sunday December 9th and 10th, 10am – 4pm respectively. Bring your kids on down to Santa’s Workshop for a visit with Santa, face painting and craft time, 11am to 2pm respectively. The Centre’s concession will be open to the public. Please bring a food donation for the Veterans Food Bank, last year we achieved 2200 pounds of dry goods for our Veterans.

Kids in Spanish has kicked off the start of their program for the 2018 season. Check out the advertisements in the newsletter and our website for program details. Contact Martha at 587-703-6815 for information.

 For the most up-to-date information on Pickleball check our website for details regarding the current programs offered at the Centre. Pickleball has been a tremendous success for Cedarbrae; the Centre is known as a “HUB” for the sport in Calgary. PWA (Prairie Wrestling Alliance) will resume the first wrestling event of the year on January 6th, 2018 at the Centre. Doors open at 7PM, tickets sold in advance or at the door. Great family fun!!! The Centre’s concession will be open to the public.

Yoga with Yulia has become a very popular instructed YOGA program offered at the Centre. Contact Yulia @ (403) 708-1918.

Arabic Language Classes taught by a linguistic expert offered for adults on Mondays and for Children on Fridays, contact Hatem @ (403) 608-6772.

Speak Right, Speak Up – The Speakers Challenge Wednesday evenings, get engaged, call (403) 921-4940.

Cedarbrae Pacesetters classes are a great way to pace yourself comfortably for an aerobic workout on Mondays and Thursdays, contact Julie @ (403) 680-6825.

WAGDogs Dog Training, you need advice and methods to help you have a better relationship with your Dog, classes on Saturday mornings, contact Claire @ (403) 708-8224.

Update on the Centre’s current project work for 2017: Completed Projects: Shelving and lighting was installed in the outdoor C-Can storage unit. Installation of our Security System Upgrade with addition of large TV monitor in the foyer to allow parents better viewing access to watch their children in the gym. Engineering assessment done on the outdoor rink to ensure the foundation and basin are secure to installing new boards and repurposing the rink for year around activities. Over the winter we will come to a solution on how to best apply a new mural on the Centre’s east wall.

Ongoing Projects: Electrical panel retrofit, and modernization is ongoing. Scheduling upper and lower cabinets in the workshop.

Volunteering your services for the outdoor rink is greatly appreciated, please call see the posted volunteer request by Dave Anderson, Director of Outdoor Sports in this edition of the newsletter to join our Cedarbrae Outdoor Rink Crew.

Our programs are regularly scheduled throughout the month, but are subject to change. Therefore, please check our website under Calendar and Current Events or call the office for information. The Centre also brings many celebrations, weddings, birthdays, and gatherings of all kinds. We offer some beautiful renovated spaces for rent; please call the Centre office to book a tour. We would love to help you! Community memberships are available for our 2017/2018 membership year. Meeting new friends, learning new skills, getting involved in community decision-making and having a positive impact on the lives of others, are just some of the benefits of becoming a member! Membership applications can be completed at the Centre or purchased through our website. Ask our Staff about the advantages of having a membership.
