What is a Community Association? In Cedarbrae it’s a great group of neighbours who have decided to get involved at a level of their choosing, some great, and some small.

There are regular members, residents who see the benefit of having a space for the Community to gather, kids to play, and apartment dwellers to garden. They see the good work being done so that everyone has a place to go, to learn, to laugh, to dance, or to have their voices heard. They know that their contributions are used to make sports, culture and learning available to everyone in their neighbourhood. They know that: ‘Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something’ (author unknown)

There are members who have chosen to volunteer in one way or another. They know that making the world a better place is a really big job and so have wisely chosen to start in their own backyard. Some bring special skills that are needed, some strong backs, but most just bring a smile and a willingness to help. A group of cheerful residents of all ages who know that every contribution to their Community will make a difference, that: ‘being good is commendable, but only when it is combined with doing good is it useful’ (author unknown)

There are Board Directors, the members who speak for the Community and make sure we are not forgotten. They get involved in big ways, planning events, managing programs, budgeting for projects and liaising with local politicians and special groups. They vote to decide on priorities for our Community Centre and happenings in our neighbourhood. They are all long term volunteers who know that: ‘Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.’(Dr. Seuss)

There are Board Executives, the people who dedicated a large piece of their lives to making Cedarbrae a better place. They lead the meetings, staff and run our Community Centre and are constantly looking for ways to advance our community. They’ll be at every event and know just about everyone! They can call up political representatives and get the call answered, they are the passion players with a vision for all that our neighbourhood can be. They know that: ‘Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote everyday about the kind of community you want to live in’ (author unknown)

Then there’s you. Where do you fit into Cedarbrae? For all those who are unsure, the best place to start is to become a member. Get involved in your own way, great or small. You may just want to be a card carrying member, or maybe you’re a passion player looking to work your way up to something noble and grand. It doesn’t matter, your voice and your support are needed and will be appreciated. A simple step towards a more purposeful life is right here in the neighbourhood, join us, and come see the difference you could make!

‘Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. (Martin Luther King, Jr.)
